Hello! I have been meaning to add more info to the blog about Growing Power so here goes…
Growing Power is located in the north part of Milwaukee, WI. They have several large hoophouses containing tiered aquaponic systems, potted plants and even plants planted directly in the ground. There is a large outdoor vermicomposting bed and several wooden boxes inside that are also vermicomposting systems. Outside they also have goats.
Growing Power was started by Will Allen in 1993. They have several farm sites in Milwaukee and Chicago (I have also worked in Chicago at the Iron Street Farm). They offer free food to area food banks, sell to restaurants, and provide plenty of info, workshops and tours. They also host plenty of healthy eating events throughout the year.
I filled flats with VC for sprouts and microgreens as part of my volunteering work. 300 flats in all! They then plant and stack the flats. A few days later, when the seeds start sprouting, the flats are laid out under grow lights until harvest time. After that the vc is separated from the greens and reused while the greens are sold.
