RM (Rubber Maid) Bin

This bin is a plastic tub with airholes drilled in it:   RM Bin (bucket)

Pro’s:

  • Cheap and easy to make.
  • Does not dry out easily.
  • Easy to fit in any space.

Con’s:

  • Easily gets excessively wet, resulting in anaerobic conditions.
  • High maintenance, because of above.
  • The worms have to be disturbed when harvesting the compost

FT (Flow-Through) Bin

Pro’s:

  • Allows for adequate air flow.
  • Can be made out of various materials.
  • Difficult to get excessively wet
  • Easy to harvest compost
  • Compost can be harvested without disturbing worms.
  • Can be custom built.

Con’s:

  • Can dry out quickly, especially if made out of wood.
  • Takes some DIY experience or a prefabricated system.
  • Uses more space than an RM bin.

 The Worm Inn

Pro’s:

  • Very easily assembled.
  • Compost is easy to harvest without disturbing the worms.
  • Adequate airflow.
  • Visually appealing.

Con’s:

  • Not a very good space saver.
