Wooden Fow Thru Worm Composting Bin

I spent a few days building the vermi-composting, wooden flow thru (FT) type bin that is going in the basement.

I had certain dimensions I had to work with in order to get it to fit in to the space we wanted it in, so the bin ended up being 4 feet x 16 inches x 3.5 feet interior dimensions, except the box has a depth of 2 feet.

I made the gaps quite wide (4 inches) and used 1/2 inch conduit (which, btw, has an O.D. of 3/4 inches I found out before going out and buying another drill bit) for the false bottom.

I am hoping the bin will self harvest at an acceptable rate. If not, I can make the gaps narrower by stretching weed eater string between the gaps in the false bottom.

In order to prepare the composting material, I collected a sizable amount of kitchen waste mixed with C (paper and leaves) and let it age for about a month in the garage.

The materials heated up for a while and then the cold came and cooled them down a lot, however I am pretty sure they did not freeze. Some of the kitchen waste was frozen before going in to the trash can.

I guess I need to order some worms now… I will start preparing the bin for their arrival in about a week. See HERE for more info on starting new bins.
