Turning the pile…

Today we turned the compost. I put the 2 smaller bins in to a big one and made sure it was watered down well. Even though it had been raining for a while, it was still quite dry inside the pile. Also notice that I left the bottom part of the compost pile on the … Continue reading Turning the pile…

Potting Soil

I make my general potting soil with 3 parts peat moss (or coco coir, or?) and 1 part each of vermiculite (helps with water retention), perlite (helps with aeration) and VC. The sled is very convenient for mixing the potting soil ingredients and then pouring back into the container.

Vermi-compost Bucket Bin Harvesting

Today, among other things, we harvested some vermi-compost from the bucket bins. Harvesting the FT is going to be a bit different. First off gotta make a sieve. There are a great many ways to go about doing this, but for this time I just built a frame out of 1x2's and stapled 1/4 inch … Continue reading Vermi-compost Bucket Bin Harvesting

With a bit of extra effort there is an endless opportunity to turn waste in to a resource quickly and … Continue reading Waste = Resource (Closing the Loop)

Worm Bin 1 Upgrade

In order to give the worms a better chance, I made boxes to fit under the bin … Continue reading Worm Bin 1 Upgrade

Bedding (for worms)

The worms seemed to be getting a bit skittish so I shredded paper like crazy in order to get them more bedding. Sorry about the devil dog, lol! If you notice in the box is shredded paper (put through a cross cut paper shredder) and in the bucket is paper that has been wadded in … Continue reading Bedding (for worms)

Worm arrival!

We got some Eisenia fetida on Friday! 5 pounds! They have settled in well and seem to be doing OK. I started prepping the compost materials several weeks in advance and built the bin a few days ago. I added about 3 pounds of worms to a 3.6 ft2 FT bin. And the rest of … Continue reading Worm arrival!

Wooden Fow Thru Worm Composting Bin

I spent a few days building the vermi-composting, wooden flow thru (FT) type bin that is going in the basement. I had certain dimensions I had to work with in order to get it to fit in to the space we wanted it in, so the bin ended up being 4 feet x 16 inches … Continue reading Wooden Fow Thru Worm Composting Bin
